Dalhousie Adventure offers a special treat to all the adventure junkies and thrill seekers to explore one of the remotest part of the Himalayas. Pangi Valley is one of the isolated and yet the most beautiful valley of Hiamchal. Pangi is famous for its natural beauty, and its altitude ranges from 18,000 ft to 21,000 ft. The lower ranges of the valley are grassy slopes with dense forests of pine and cedar. Majestic mountains enhance the beauty. Dharwas, the biggest village of the valley, is famous for natural spring of mineral water named Tilmili. Hazelnuts are grown here in abundance. Another attraction is Sural, which is a beautiful sub-valley of Pangi.
Pangi valley, a very forbidden and difficult gorge guard the area and not many have visited there. Pangi, the administrative subdivision of Chamba district is a forlorn world, where time and space acquire a new dimension in this snow-bound, land-locked, narrow valley sandwiched between the mighty Pir-Panjal and Zanskar ranges of the Himalayas. Pangi valley remains cut off from the rest of the world for about six months in a year even today. Heavy snowfalls and semi-arctic conditions make the living very tough in this valley. So forbidden was this range that in the earlier times, every state official proceeding on the duty to Pangi was granted special allowance under the head "funeral expenses", as his return, alive or dead, was not taken as a matter of certainty.
Motor road to the headquarters of Churah sub-division takes us to Tissa (Bhanjraru). The landscape id rugged yet beautiful Bhanjraru is the official name of the sub-divisional headquarters. Tissa has many lakes, the most prominent being Ghadasru, Mahadev Dal, Mahakali Dal, Maral Dal amd Mehalwar Dal. All these are approachable by foot. Bhandal and Kihar are breathtakingly beautiful and appear to be trapped in time wrap.
Bairagarh is located at a distance of twenty-seven kilometres from Tissa and is the last village of Churah area. Both Trella (twentv km from Tissa) and Bairagarh are connected with a motor road. The village is a quite retreat overlooking a panorama of the Himalayan peaks. Earlier Trella was the main business center for Pangi. Being the last bus terminus all supplies were taken on headload or on the backs of sheep and goats. Mules crossed the pass for first time in early eighties.
This seventeen kilometers long trail is largely well-defined and offers gradual climb up to Hazappad glacier, after the glacier the path ascends at steep gradient up to Satrundi. Satrundi is the base camp below the Sach pass that connects Pangi valley to Chamba The road from Bairagarh to Satrundi passes thorough one of the thickest forest in the area dominated by deodar, the forest is known as Kalaban (black forest). The mountain slopes are full of wild flowers of every hue. We will camp in this serene environment and prepare themselves for the next day.
Four kilometers ascent to Sach pass is undertaken early morning from Satrundi. Normally, pass is not crossed in the afternoon. Beyond Satrundi, the region remains under snow almost throughout the year though the path is clear of snow in post-monsoon months. There is small temple at the top of the pass. Travellers offer a piece of red cloth and tie it to the trishuls (trident) affixed at the temple. Usually they also tie a piece of cloth on their wrist or stick it in their garments for the rest of the journey. Teashops function at the top for about three months. They serve tea, boiled spicy black grams, noodles, biscuits and light snacks.
